History
Charlotte’s humble beginnings trace back to the 1700s as a fledgling village and courthouse for Mecklenburg County settlers. But it was the discovery of gold in 1799 that first put Charlotte on the map.
Considered the first “Gold Rush” in the United States, the Charlotte Mint was established in 1837 to process the precious ore during America’s first gold rush. We bet those prospectors chasing gold down Little Sugar Creek never imagined modern day skyscrapers!
Charlotte later earned the nickname “The Wall Street of the South” as cotton trading and textile manufacturing boomed after the Civil War. Bank of America and other prominent banks sprouted during this time.
Like many other cities in the south in the 1950s and 1960s, African Americans fought segregation and discrimination through non-violent protests and boycotts. Kelly Alexander reorganized the Charlotte NAACP chapter and emerged as one of the Tar Heel State’s leading civil rights leaders during the 1950s and 1960s. Ministers led the Southern Leadership Conference (SCLC), an influential organization that consistently employed nonviolent means. Community leader and civil rights activist Julius Chambers worked to desegregate schools in 1971 with the Swann vs. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education case.
Charlotte faced turbulent integration of schools in the 1970s, but emerged more progressive and continues that trajectory today. Massive growth in recent decades, especially in banking and aviation, has shaped Charlotte into a cosmopolitan destination while preserving its down-home charm. The city still grapples with issues of equality but has made strides since its early days. Who knew those early trading days would make “The Hornet’s Nest” a world class city buzzing with energy!

Charlotte’s distinctive neighborhoods add to the city’s character, each with their own vibe and appeal. From modern high-rises in Uptown to historic homes in Dilworth, Charlotte offers diverse community options. Get to know some of the Queen City’s most beloved areas:

- Plaza Midwood is an up-and-coming residential neighborhood on the near east side of Charlotte which attracts trendsetters to tree lined blocks of mid-century house, and well-loved boutiques like Suc and hip wine bars and eateries lining Central Ave. Locals flock to the Midwood Smokehouse, Common Market, and Pinpouse for Plaza Midwood’s lively nightlife.
- Situated on the near south side of the city, Myers Park is an upscale inner-city ‘hood graced with palatial homes and manicured lawns. Quiet streets like Hermitage Road and Selwyn Avenue offer glimpses of Charlotte’s old money. The neighborhood boasts fanciful churches and restaurants like Good Food on Montford.
- South End’s restored warehouses house microbreweries like Sycamore and Atchin’ Banjo alongside posh apartments. Rail Trail access, weekly farmers markets, and events like Food Truck Fridays make SouthEnd both hip and family-friendly.

Weather
I’m not gonna lie – Charlotte summers are hot, humid, and can literally take your breath away just walking outside! We’re talking temperatures in the 90s or above, especially in July and August. Thick, swampy air that can almost make you chew your air. Afternoon thunderstorms provide some relief, but otherwise, expect blazing sunny days perfect for pool parties and patio beers.
In spring and fall, temperatures cool off into the delightful 60s and 70s. Flowers bloom, trees graciously provide shade, and residents emerge to enjoy outdoor activities again. But don’t stow the shorts yet! Random heat waves still strike.
Winters offer a mild reprieve in the 50s, but frigid cold snaps do happen. And you never know what you’ll get precipitation-wise! Snowstorms sometimes dump several inches, while other years pass with just a dusting. Freezing rain also lurks, turning roads into hazardous slick messes.
So in summary, Charlotte is no stranger to extreme heat, cold, thunderstorms, and the occasional blizzard! But that’s part of what makes experiencing the full range of seasons here memorable. We get a little taste of it all in this city.
